It's Atlanta Mania TIME!

Well it's the most wonderful time of the year! Time for my annual SCW Mania  experience :-D

If you have not experienced the "high" that is being surrounded by enthusiastic, driven, educated, and supportive fitness professionals ... You are missing out!

I think fitness pros might be some of the most positive people you'll meet, and its contagious! I always feel like I can take on the world after these conferences.

If you would like a little taste of this excitement, and you're in the Atlanta Area this weekend, I highly encourage you to attend some of the free sessions taking place this weekend. Yes! I said free!

The state of the industry panel was the highlight for me last mania. I had taken a year off from teaching group fitness, I was burned out from teaching so many classes, and the panel inspired me. I left with a renewed since of purpose. Fitness can change people's life and I was an agent of that change! See its contagious ;-)

Well if I'm attending a workshop, you know I am getting a new training under my belt. This Mania I am taking the Trigger Point Therapy MCT level 1 course.

If you glance back at my body maintenance post you'll know I'm a believer in incorporating restorative work into your fitness program. I am looking forward to learning proper techniques to improve the mobility and function of my clients, athletes, and myself.

If you happen to be at the conference come say hi! I'll be working as a staff assistant all weekend. I'll be sporting my signature Flirty Girl Camo cap ;-)

SCW Recap...Day 1 Yoga!

"Namaste"

I woke up super excited about the day.  I had my super cool ACE yoga tank and my cute floral yoga mat. I would be diving into a new dimension of my fitness development, and learn a skill that I have always had so much respect for. It was Yoga Day!

My 1st yoga class was at UGA and I took it with my girlfriends Anisha and Latoya. I was not very flexible but it was very relaxing.  I think I bought a Yoga DVD after that, I probably watched it once.  Then my Dad invited me out to Hot Yoga at an Atlanta studio. It was sooo much fun! That is what got the yoga spark going. Since then I would pick up occasional classes at Georgia Tech. During my exercise science internship they needed a sub for a Yoga class, but it was the one area I did not feel comfortable teaching. If my goal was to be a multi-dimensional fitness instructor I would have to get stronger in the area of mind-body fitness.  Hello Yoga Fundamentals!

It's funny how your perceptions of Yoga and the mind body community can influence your behavior.  I wanted some coffee sooo badly, I mean I was dragging. But, some part of my brain convinced me that coffee is bad and that my instructor might judge my vente coffee I so desperately wanted. Have you met Lawrence? Yeah he definitely had his own coffee and did not care what was in our glass.

Lawrence Biscontini, our facilitator was great.  His personality leapt off the stage, not at all what I was thinking for a Yoga instructor, but I really appreciated it.  He was fun, and he joked with us, he kept things light and informative. It was really funny, he would try and engage us and we would all just stare at him like everyone was thinking the same thing...are we "allowed" to laugh and respond during Yoga? But, I learned that just like boot camps and cardioboxing classes, Yoga does not have to be one size fit all.  The instructor and their community are what make the class.

Over the next 9 and a half hours we learned:
- 30 of the basic movements of Hatha Yoga, the discipline of opposites, sun & moon yoga
- the brain body breathe connection
- Sanskrit terminology
- cue what you want a participant to do
-Ujayyi breathing
- 6 Categories of spinal movement in relation to Hatha Yoga
- 3 phases of yoga movement
- how to facilitate movement for a safe and effective warm up, class, and cool down
- the purpose, postures, progression, prana, precepts, and prescrition for each asana
- yoga is made for all people, not all people are made for all postures

We went through so many progressions of the different postures and every movement was mindful: posture, purpose, and breathe. One of the most important things I took from the Yoga training was a greater focus and intention when my body moves. It forced me to take inventory of muscular strength and flexibility imbalances.  Generally, I am so consumed with the loads and the time and the reps, that I forget to focus on the base, the posture, and the intent of the movement.  Without that awareness I will eventually hurt myself.

I have been more mindful of my posture during my weight training.  I have even had to lighten the load on some of the lifts, recognizing I was going out of alignment at certain points to achieve the reps.

Our facilitator gave us several assignments to complete before we begin teaching. One was taking a variety of yoga classes from different instructors in the community.
I know sampling instructors and classes will help me develop my style and help me absorb the yoga culture.  In the few experiences I have had, each instructor and style was different.  I can't wait to see what all is out there!

This weekend I am taking my lil sis to "Rock Star Yoga" with Tough Love Yoga in midtown.  It is a rooftop yoga class! How could I pass up that opportunity!

SCW Kickoff Tomorrow!

Tomorrow I will be participating in Yoga Fundamentals I by Lawrence Biscontini.

Why would a bodybuilder be interested in Yoga? Strength without flexibility isn't functional and I want to promote well rounded life long fitness.  Bonus: Increased flexibility and range of motion can lead to increased strength performance, a tight shortened muscle has no where to go.

I am thinking long term. I have dabbled in a little bit of everything in the fitness industry, and I have always been able to appreciate a great yoga class. I have often participated in auditions and evaluations of Yoga instructors, but could only approach it from the "teaching" aspect. When the time comes that I am responsible for hiring a Yoga instructor, I need to be able to evaluate whether the moves they are doing are safe and appropriate for clients. If I am managing a facility and a Yoga instructor is not available, I want to be able to step in and lead a basic class.  I feel in the fitness industry it is important to be a jack of all trades, and having the opportunity to learn so many different components of fitness is why I love this industry.
Got my mat, attire, and manual, let's get flexible!

SCW Outdoor Boot Camp Certification

Countdown to training...

Just completed my Flirty Girl Fitness Certification. It was amaaaazing. Flitry Girl Fitness: Booty Beat is NOT striptease, it is fitness based choreography from the creators of Flirty Girl. Fun Flirty dance moves, with cardio intervals that got me up to 180 BPM and kept me between 130 and 170 most other times. That is pretty amazing for a choreography based class!!! The moves were fun and fairly easy taking moves from all genres of popular dance. With moves like "flash dance", "the old school" - similar to the carlton dance, "the cow girl", "pulp fiction" - haha yeah like the moves John Travolta busted out . I am looking forward to trying to get some things running.

Got my next certification in about an hour, time to fuel up and head out.

The last certification was brutal , just got some dinner into me a few minutes ago. But, I am now also a Certified Outdoor Boot Camp Instructor. Yaaaaaay!!! I learned some really great body weight combos that I can not wait to start implementing with clients.

So I am only 1 certification away from being ready to Launch my business. I will probally be doing a few teaser classes at various studios until I am ready to launch.

I am very excited!!!
