#UNSTINKABLE Event Athleta: Body Weight Circuit with Atlantic Station

Disclosure: I was invited to host a workout as part of Athleta's #UNSTINKABLE top promotion. I received an Athleta top as part of my participation in the promotion. All opinions are my own.

Athleta hosted company wide workouts to promote their Unstinkable tops with Polygiene. What makes these tops different? "Natural silver salts in the fabric stop odor-causing bacteria from raising a stink. Less laundry for you and more time doing what you love" - Athleta. I sweat so much when I workout and teach, so a top that can hold up to that would be great. So I kept my top on for several hours after I led my my workout still no funk. So far so good. As always the tops are stylish and high quality.

I had a blast leading the Body Blast workout with the Athleta Atlantic Station! We went through an 8 exercise circuit working the entire body using just our body weight, no equipment necessary! Here is the circuit we completed:

1. Squat Thrust "Burpee" (Cardio - Total Body)
  • From standing squat down and place hands on the ground slightly wider than shoulder width apart
  • Extend the hips and hop or walk the feet back until you are in a plank position
  • Flex the hips and hop or walk the feet to the hands
  • Extend the hips and stand or hop up to standing position

2. Speed Skate (Cardio - Total Body)
  • From standing neutral position, lead foot takes a lateral side step or leap, other foot crosses behind
  • Front arm swings across the body
  • As opposing limbs move the obliques activate during rotation

3. Lateral Squat w Hip Abduction to Calf Raise (Lower Body)
  • From standing neutral position, lateral side step and lower into a wide stance squat
  • At the top of the squat abduct leg lifting laterally and away from the body
  • Adduct leg bringing it back to the center, plantar flex lifting the heels off the ground into a calf raise
  • Drop heels and return to neutral standing position
  • Repeat on the other leg

4. Rear Lunge w Hip Extension (Lower Body and Core)
  • From standing neutral position, extend one leg back, keep other foot planted on the ground
  • Bend both legs, flexing at the knees
  • Lift back foot off of the ground extending at the hip
  • Extend arms forward and extend at hip until arms and leg form a straight line from fingertips to ankle and chest is parallel to the floor (advanced progression)
  • Engage core and slowly bring leg back to the ground, bring arms down to the side, return to standing neutral position

5. Inchworm to Side Plank (Core and Upper Body)
  • From standing neutral position flex at the hips and bring hands to the ground in front of or to the outside of the feet
  • Walk the hand forward until the hips are extended into plank position and hand are directly under the shoulders
  • From plank position rotate through the hips, opening the chest, and extending 1 arm toward the sky. Forming a straightline from extend arm to supporting arm in side plank

6. Lateral Walking Plank (Core and Upper Body)
  • From plank position abduct shoulder and legs moving laterally across the floor
  • Adduct shoulders back to neutral plank position
  • Repeat left and right covering as much space as you have

7. Triceps Push Up (Core and Upper Body)
  • From neutral plank position or kneeling plank with hands positioned directly under the shoulders
  • Flex at the elbows lowering the chest to the ground
  • As the elbows bend keep them as close to the body as possible to

8. V-Sit w Knee Lifts (Core)
  • From a seated position, flex the knees, plant feet on the floor, flex a the hips so the body forms a V
  • to prevent roudning of the upper back, roll shoulders back, press the chest forward, to create flat back
  • From the V-sit position lift 1 knee towards the chest while the other foot stays on the ground
  • Alternate knee lifts
  • Bring opposing elbow to knee, alternating knee lifts (advanced progression)
We performed each exercise for 45 seconds with a 15 second rest between each exercise. I included a 10 minute warm up, 2 minute recovery between each round, and 10 minute cool down. Each round was 8 minutes of work and 2 minutes of recovery, for a total of 10 minutes per round. We repeated the circuit 3 times, 30 minutes of conditioning. Total workout time 50 minutes. If you're doing this workout at home you could shorten the warm up and cool down to meet your time limits. In 20 minutes you could get in a total body workout!

Friday Photo Recap

Not much to share today so I thought I would share some of my photos from the week.

Some food photos from the 21 Day Sugar Detox.

(Chicken thighs, eggs, spinach, and avocado)

(Turkey burger, quinoa, and salsa)

(Apple turkey sausage, apple slices, and baby carrots)

Wednesday I hit a wall. I felt groggy, fatigued, and overall sick. I had to miss an evening class, and I hardly ever miss class. Feeling better now, not sure what the issue was.

The past few weeks I have posted my must haves for a summer getaway for the #AthletaInTheBag giveaway. Here are my blogger essentials for any getaway.

A journal for jotting down ideas or interesting information about the place I'm visiting. Cords and back up battery packs cuz a blogger is always prepared. A waterproof shatter proof camera so I can leave the iPhone safe at home while I swim, climb, and explore. Last but not least a comfy Athleta top to do it all in.

Overall a productive week.

I hope you had a great week too.

Larissa

Saturday Circuit Shred Workout

I had a great time teaching Circuit Shred today at Athleta Atlantic.

Below is today's workout.

Tweet and Share this Workout with Friends

After a 10 Minute Warm Up and demo of each station we prepared for the 8 minute circuit. The circuit included 8 stations, 45 seconds per station, 15 seconds transition, and 1-2 minutes of rest between rounds. I decided to toss out the Torso Rotation to give a little extra recovery time between rounds. Each station had 3 different levels to choose from and I offered additional progressions as needed. Everyone rocked it!

My favorite station was the Inchworm with Mountain Climbers. All the ladies seemed to enjoy using the cloth sliders. Everyone said they enjoyed getting in a weight training workout for the day. I love weights, so I was glad to be able to share what I love and offer something a little different today.

Thanks again to all the ladies who came out today! I hope to see you at the next event!

Did you know that Athleta at Atlantic Station hosts FREE fitness classes?

Well now you know! I will be teaching my 2nd class this month on Saturday 2/28/15 from 9AM-10AM. Join me for a mix of power, strength, and core exercises designed to challenge and improve your overall fitness.

Who can participate
All fitness levels are welcome. I have more than 7 years of experience in the industry and can select an exercise to meet your needs. Let me know if you have any special considerations and I will be sure to offer an appropriate progression for you.

What to expect
Circuit Shred is designed to be a high intensity circuit training experience with bouts of power exercises followed by an active recovery of strength and core exercises. The circuit is 8 stations and last approximately 8 minutes with 1-2 minutes of recovery between rounds.  Throughout class I will ask you to use rating of perceived exertion(RPE 0-10) to gauge your intensity level (Green, 2014, p.144). I will encourage you to push yourself to hit that 7-8 RPE range. But, listen to your body and choose a an intensity option that meets your fitness goals.

What to bring
Bring a towel, a water bottle, and a positive attitude. A mat is optional if you have 1, the positive attitude is mandatory.

If you have any questions please comment below and I would be happy to answer any questions you have. See you Saturday!

Green, D.J(ed) (2014). ACE Personal Trainer Manual: The Ultimate Resource For Fitness Professionals (5th ed.): SanDiego, CA: American Council on Exercise.

  • A RPE of 3-4 is low intensity (warm up and cool down)
  • 5-6 is considered moderate intensity

AFAA APEX in the ATL: Part 1

Day 1 of AFAA Apex I got to hang out with AFAA Presenter Yoko and 10 other fitness professional during Group Exercise: The Practical Way

Our gym was hosting so I assisted with registration and lunch logistics.

My favorite part of the day was the practical skills portion. We discussed musicality and practiced cueing and creating 6 progressions for a variety of exercises.

Can you think of 6 progressions for a lunge?
We used:
- wall assisted step forward
- step up onto step
- isolated lunge forward
- forward alternating lunge
- walking lunge
- plyometrics lunge

Below is a picture of My partner Catherine and I after successfully demonstrating our excercise cueing skills.

It is not as easy as it looks, and it is definitely a skill worth practicing and perfecting.

Yoko did a great job leading our group for the day. She has over 30 years of experience and her blend of knowledge, humor, and sincere desire for our success made for a great workshop.

I look forward to gaining more knowledge and practicing more skills tomorrow.

I Bet Santa Crossfits!

I hope everyone had a fit and festive holiday!  I know I have thoroughly enjoyed my time off!

Kicked off my vacation Friday with a workout and a trip to Athleta in Atlantic Station.

It was there open house event and my 1st time experiencing there fitness wear. There clothes are ridiculously high quality. I am vert textural and loved the feel of there products, and their staff was extremely attentive and friendly, great customer service. It wasn't just about the clothes tho. I was also able to get on their fitness schedule for January 13th Tabata and the 27th for Flirty Girl Fitness.

Then Saturday Me, the hubs, and my lil sis went up to Helen, Ga for wine tasting.  Ummm guess who left there ID at home and didn't realize it til they reached the winery, this girl! Luckily I have been before so I was able to be a good host and get the husband to by the bottles I wanted, crisis averted!

1st stop, Habersham Winery in Nanoochee village.

Then Nora's Mill for locally milled flour and Jumping Goat Coffee for a caffine boost.

Then we made our way into the Helen village, where Alicia played nice with big Santa.

After Helen, we went and picked up our new family member Gus!

He is an early Christmas present for my husband who has been wanting a dog for years.

Sunday was yoga, deadlifts, box jumps, and burpees.

Monday kicked off a week of crossfit. We did a hero's workout, "Victoria", these are my favorite, they are inspiring and intense.

Victoria was the Sandy Hook teacher that hid all her kids when the gun man came to her classroom. She died protecting the lives of her students. I was humbled and honored to do a workout in her name.

Tuesday, Christmas! I got lots of awesome gifts, including a giftcard to Athleta, Just Dance 4, and a beanie to get through the cold weather.

Wednesday, I achieved a PR of 105 on my floor press

and rocked my overhead squats, still need a little more depth to reach the CF standard but I'm getting there.

Thursday was a Crossfit birthday workout for my lil sis!

Friday, we worked on Sumo deadlift, with a MetCon of DB snatches and pull ups.

I achieved a PR on my Sumo Deadlift at 205lbs

then Alicia PR'd at 215lbs, siblings ;-) she keeps me motivated, no slacking with her around.

Saturday, kipping work and super team WOD.

We did a little bit of everything in this one including tire flips and my nemisis the kick up handstand. But, forcing me to do at least 10 is a good way to conquer the fear.  1st 5 were ugly 2nd 5 were solid kick ups!

We took Gus for his 1st vet visit and all is well on the puppy front! He has one command so far, he has a really good sit ;-)

I have a few more days of vaction time, and I am loving it!

Enjoy your friends and family this season,
See you in the New Year!
